Abstract :
Hong Kong has a wonderful system to efficiently collect Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) from residential, commercial and public spaces. However, with the increasing demands on HK’s landfill space and growing private and public expectations for efficient resource recovery, how can the community work together to minimize the volume of waste generated and to more effectively handle what is generated. This presentation will introduce a vision for integrated resource recovery and waste management in HK, based on the better utilization of the Hong Kong Government’s existing waste management infrastructure. The vision links together opportunities from roadside collection points, to managing waste contractors, to supporting recycling organizations along with changes to planning zones ultimately enabling HK to achieve more with their infrastructure. Takeaways from the presentation will be creative solutions on how tenants and property managers could play an increasing part in the solution. So without giving too much away, we need more people passionate about making better use of resources in Hong Kong.
