Abstract:

Commissioning, retro-commissioning and recommissioning are all very important tasks that ensure a building is fine-tuned and optimized for its operations. Entering the big data era, monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx) offers the potential to maximise the yield of commissioning by higher penetration and efficienccy, revolutionising project based commissioning works into operations for continuous improvement and issue identification.

MBCx leverages the increasing power of technology to assure that building operators and managers have the insight of the building, making the invisible visible. This empowers building personnel with the intelligence to deal with frequently overlooked issues in operation or conventional project based commissioning works.

In return, whilst the potential to improve quality of service and energy efficiency is usually considered the primary tangible benefits of MBCx, the application of MBCs also provides intangible benefits such as policing best practice, increasing building operators and managers’ skillset, identification of systemic failure and providing visibility of service contracts’ performance.
