'TransForM', the Hong Kong IFMA Chapter's annual conference for 2005 was held on the 2 nd and 3 rd of November at Cyberport. This year's theme, tag lined 'change is the only constant' focused on how the FM industry manages change and continues to deliver quality service in a changing business environment. The two day event incorporated a day of presentations, open forum debate and networking opportunities followed by a day of master class workshops.

The day two workshops delivered by Stephen Sonsino and Peter Andrew incorporated much of what was discussed on day one of the event and focused on effective leadership and understanding change issues in relation to delivering FM solutions.

This year's conference was specifically aimed at strategic FM issues and attracted around 200 delegates to the state of the art Cyberport facility. The event enabled delegates to benefit from the experiences of some of the industries most noted professionals.

"Only the wisest and stupidest of men never change." ~ Confucius 5th Century BC
"Whosoever desires constant success must change his conduct with the times." ~ Machiavelli 15th Century

We are surrounded by change, especially in technology, and it is affecting the way we live, work and play. Possibly no city in the world has changed as much as Hong Kong has over the past 50 or even 5 years.

None of us knows for sure what the next major change will be in the Facilities Management industry or where new opportunities will lie. What we do know is that change is certain:

In the companies we work for

For our customers who we offer facility management services to.
Yet how well prepared is the Facility Manager to deal with this?

Leading local and international speakers were assembled to help prepare delegates for change, and the uncertainties that lie ahead. They were experienced in leading and managing change, both from a Facility Management and general perspective.

Change is predictable. Change is the only constant.

"It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory!" - William Deming, 20th Century

Transform was a one-day conference, linked to two half- day intensive workshops. It focuses on current and future changes in the business environment and the Facility Management industry.

The two half-day workshops linked to the conference were held on the following day.

Morning Workshop

Through a series of presentations and interactive discussions with industry peers, Peter Andrew explored three key elements under the theme of Successfully Implementing New Workplace Environments:

Key Elements
1
Emerging Workplace Trends - Knowledge through socialisation, flexibility through mobilility, the shift to temporally and physically asynchronous work, and the next wave of workplace technologies
2
Managing Workplace Change - Implementing workplace trends in your organisation
3
Measurement - Connecting workplace performance to business performance in a purposeful way

The session included discussion between the participants to understand what changes were being implemented or being considered to be implemented in their respective workplaces, how change was being implemented, what issues had been faced, what "big wins" had been achieved, what was being measured now and what participants would like to be measured.

Afternoon Workshop

Using a sequence of experiential exercises, Steven Sonsino explored with participants 'The Seven Failings of Really Useless Leaders'. Building on the plenary keynote session at the conference, Steven pushed participants to try out their existing leadership style and benchmark themselves against the Seven Failings'framework.

Participants received direct feedback on how they lead and on how to improve their style and learned exactly how to benefit from the tactics and strategies of inspirational leaders.
